In the Islands: WBC Global Mission Journey to Jamaica
January 8-15, 2010
“Let them give glory unto The Lord, and declare His praise in the Islands.” Psalm 42:2
On January 8 and 9, a team of 27 from Whitesburg Baptist Church traveled to Montego Bay, Jamaica, West Indies, for the purpose of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. The WBC Global Mission Team partnered with Dr. Heckford Sharpe, Senior Pastor of the West Gate Hills Baptist Church. The team members served on one of four strategic teams: Evangelistic, Meal, Construction and Medical.
Upon arrival in Montego Bay, we were warmly greeted by Dr. Sharpe at the Sangster International Airport. We then traveled to the Hotel Gloriana founded by Gloria Eugenie Minto, to settle in.
The mission began well Saturday evening, with the Evangelism Team leading in revival services at the West Gate Hills Baptist Church. After Sunday services on January 10, the four teams started their day at 6 a.m. Monday, January 11. The Meal team began at 6 a.m. preparing 3 meals daily for the team. The Medical Team, led by Dr. Kathryn Cashner, and Construction Team, led by Gordon Gilbreath, proceeded to the West Gate Hills Baptist Church where a free clinic as well as construction on the new veranda began.
The Evangelism Team began their ministry at Hopewell High School, Supreme Preparatory School and Sam Sharpe Square. The evening finished about 9:00 p.m. after an evangelistic outreach on Sam Sharpe Square.
Tuesday began well. After a wonderful 6 a.m. breakfast prepared by the Meal Team, the Medical and Construction Teams traveled to their ministry site at West Gate. The Creative Arts Evangelism Team served at John’s Hall School as well as the Women’s Center. However, at the end of our evening ministry on Sam Sharpe Square, we heard of the news of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The news reports broadcasted Tsunami warnings for Jamaica and Cuba. We left our hotel that evening at approximately 10:30 p.m. for the interior. About midnight, Trevor, our driver, arrived at Country Side Hotel where we stayed the night. God knew our need and provided this beautiful hotel on 9 acres of Jamaican countryside.
The next morning we heard nothing had happened in Montego Bay so we returned and completed our mission.
